Pomeranian Temperament

This is what the breed standard says about the Spitz:

BEHAVIOUR / TEMPERAMENT:

The German Spitz is always attentive, lively and exceptionally devoted to its owner. It is very receptive and easy to train. Its distrust of strangers and lack of hunting instinct make it an ideal watchdog for the home or farm. The German Spitz is neither timid nor aggressive. Its resilience to the weather, robustness and longevity are among its most remarkable qualities.

It is true. 🙂

Above all, the Pomeranian is a very alert little dog. Nothing escapes its notice, and it is an excellent observer. Reserved with strangers, it does not leap with excitement at every visitor. It prefers to assess a newcomer from a distance first. Once it accepts that person, it will accept their affection too. 🙂

Remember that the owner has a huge influence on a Pomeranian’s temperament.

A well-raised Pomeranian is gentle and self-confident.

Karmelka, our Pomeranian companion

I admit that we wondered how the Pomeranian we were waiting for would settle into our family.

We share our home with an Irish Setter and English Springer Spaniels. They are medium-sized but quite energetic dogs. We wondered how they would accept such a tiny dog, and vice versa. Reality exceeded our expectations. 🙂

Karmelka greeted each of our dogs calmly and confidently. They accepted her into the pack without any difficulty and respect her personal space.

Karmelka seems completely unconcerned about her height. She plays wonderfully with the adult Springers and keeps up with them on walks, while spending her evenings on my lap.

The Springer Spaniels enjoy affection from everyone in the household, and every visitor is a potential source of a generous extra helping of cuddles.

Karmelka, on the other hand, has chosen one person in our family and wants to stay close to them—preferably on their lap. 😉

She cannot be bribed, either.

So a Pomeranian’s temperament is very different from that of our other dogs.
